The Full Daily Harvest Review
So what did we think of Daily Harvest delivery service?
First a little bit about our family:
- We are a family of 4 – 2 adults and 2 young boys (under 4)
- We generally eat whole, real, unprocessed foods
- Green smoothies have been a part of our lives for YEARS – before even having kids
- We almost always have smoothie supplies on hand
- We LOVE our Vitamix blender
I tell you all of that because our review will likely be most relevant to families with a similar make-up and habits. (Though I’ve included some thoughts below on who else Daily Harvest might be great for.)
Daily Harvest: The Products
We LOVED that Daily Harvest products are super nutritious. Amongst all of the products that we tried there were no funky ingredients and they used both fruits and vegetables really creatively.
Overall, this is a great way to easily provide healthy food for your family.
Here’s a look at what we got in our 2 weeks of order:
Ultimately, I’d say the products taste good. That said, these are not milkshakes, they are very much smoothies. And they probably err on the side of less sweet rather than overly sweet. I think this is really great from a nutrition perspective, but from a taste perspective, I could see it being a little off-putting to some.
Here’s what we thought of the items we tried:
- Chocolate Almond and Protein Chia Parfait: I’m not sure what makes this a parfait. I’d say it’s like a chia pudding in that you add milk to the frozen container and let it sit overnight. The flavor was pretty good, though the “chia parfaits” wouldn’t be the right choice for those of you who don’t like foods that are roughly the texture of tapioca.
- Cinnamon Protein & Banana Overnight Oats: The overnight oats are a great, easy on-the-go option. I actually added milk the night before and then took the finished product with us on an airplane as a healthy option. The flavor was pretty decent – very strongly flavored with cinnamon and banana. I wasn’t a huge fan, though, of the slightly slimy texture (I’m guessing from the frozen banana) and the whole chickpeas seemed out of place in a breakfast dish.
- Blueberry & Hemp Smoothie: This smoothie felt really nourishing and was a great adult treat in that it was not too sweet and not too high in calories. There is a strong ginger taste, so don’t pick this one if that’s not for you!
- Cacao & Avocado Smoothie: My 3 year old loved this smoothie! It’s really thick and creamy and this one does actually taste like a milkshake. I was super fascinated by the presence of zucchini and pumpkin seeds for the extra dose of nutrition.
- Cold Brew Almond: This is, obviously, a parent only treat. The resulting smoothie is creamy and slightly sweet, though a bit watery too. I loved the idea of this one, though I feel like I might rather make it myself and include a date for a little extra sweetness.
- Cacao Cookie Dough Sundae: I was SO excited for this sundae. Unfortunately, the result, while pretty tasty and sweetened entirely by dates with cauliflower as the base, was too coarse and chunky to really remind me of soft serve. All in all, this is a really cool idea, but it just wasn’t quite THERE yet.
Here are some other options that might be great for kids:
- Mango & Greens Smoothie
- Mango & Papaya Smoothie
- Strawberry banana & Peach Smoothie 🍑
- Chocolate Brownie Batter Sundae
Daily Harvest Review: So, is it good for families?
All in all, Daily Harvest is a great, healthy option for busy people. Though I think it’s probably best for the busy parents than it is for their kids based on the size, price, and flavor of the cups that I tried.
Here’s an element by element look at my opinion:
Taste: ⭐ 1 star
- Solid flavor but you weren’t going to mistake them for milkshakes
Price: 0 stars
- Fair price but more than I’d be willing to pay – especially for a smoothie for my kids
- I could make similar smoothies for a lot less in my own kitchen
- This was the main part of the reason I wouldn’t continue on with the Daily Harvest execept in the cases I note below
Nutrition and Quality of Ingredients: ⭐ ⭐ 2 stars
- I was really impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the things they both DID and DIDN’T use
Packaging: ⭐ ⭐ 2 stars
- All of their packaging is recyclable
- The smoothie cups with lids were particularly cool and helpful!
Ease of Use: ⭐ 1 star
- The smoothies were super easy to make with the exception of the soft serve
- I was less enthused about the ease of ordering and updating subscriptions. They have a Saturday 6 pm EST cutoff before Wednesday deliver which I found challenging to remember and I didn’t want the same smoothies every week. See the video for more details on this.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, I think that Daily Harvest is best for when you’re entering a busy period of life and may need some extra support to ensure you’re eating healthy while you feed your kids healthy as well. Here are some ideas of when I’d be likely to reactivate my account and use it again:
- During a kitchen remodel
- If my kids had early morning sports games and I needed to eat on the go
- Post-pregnancy when all your time is spent taking care of a new baby
- Post-surgery when cooking would be challenging or not an option
I will say that I think a Daily Harvest gift card would make a FANTASTIC gift for someone who’s having a baby or having surgery.
