I’m not a crafty mom. I don’t love cleaning up glitter. Or picking up pieces of play-doh from the floor. In fact, I don’t even keep those things stocked in my house. BUT I do love helping my kids get creative with things I already have on hand.
And in my house, that means kitchen things.
This is how the idea of kids’ kitchen crafts was born. The idea is to share easy projects that use the things you already have in your kitchen (and little else) to help your kids have fun, develop, and stay busy. So…without further ado…my first kids’ kitchen craft!
How To Make a Rainbow from Cheerios
To do this kitchen craft, you’ll need:
- 6 cups of Cheerios (or other “O” cereal)
- Red, Yellow, and Blue Food Coloring – we used this Watkins brand with no artificial dyes
- At least 3 quart-sized Ziploc bags
- Large baking sheet
- Rainbow print-out
- Glue
- Cotton Balls (optional)

Make the Rainbow Os
First, you need to make the rainbow-colored “Os”. This is quite easy and surprisingly mess-free.
To make RED:
- Take 1 Ziploc bag.
- Add in 10 drops of red food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
To make ORANGE:
- Re-use the Ziploc bag from making the red Os.
- Add in 5 drops of red food coloring and 5 drops of yellow food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
To make YELLOW:
- Take 1 Ziploc bag.
- Add in 10 drops of yellow food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
To make GREEN:
- Re-use the Ziploc bag from making the yellow Os.
- Add 5 drops of blue food coloring and 5 drops of yellow food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
To make BLUE:
- Take 1 Ziploc bag.
- Add 10 drops of blue food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
To make PURPLE:
- RE-use the Ziploc bag from making the blue Os.
- Add 5 drops of red food coloring and 5 drops of blue food coloring and 2 tsp water.
- Add in 1 cup Os.
- Seal bag and shake well, until all of the Os are coated.
- Pour onto a baking sheet to dry.
Once all of the colors are laid out, you can either let the Os dry overnight or place them in the oven at 150 degrees F for about 30 minutes.
DECORATE THE RAINBOW
Here’s where you can really hand the project off to the kids! Print out the rainbow template.
Set the kids up with some glue and the dried, rainbow Os. Let them have fun gluing each color of Os onto the corresponding rainbow line of the template. If using, add cotton balls to the clouds. Hang on your fridge and enjoy!
